After yet another strategically timed expulsion during a diaper changing, and with umbilical stump no more, we decided to try to give Trixie a little bath. Not a full immersion, but more of a piecemeal operation where we would suspend her in the kitchen sink, hold each extremity under running water and then rotate around to the next one. She didn’t mind the water one bit, and for the moment is as clean as she’s been since we got her home. We expect this state to last for about 2 hours.

Extra! Extra! Belly Button Exposed!
August 17th, 2003 · No Comments
Trixie just lost her umbilical cord. Pretty gross — a wadded up stiff, little clot of dried blood, tissue and plastic clamp. It’s actually almost exactly the same size, texture and color of a raisin. But not the plump, juicy, golden Dole variety. A dried, bottom of the can, back of the pantry, Harris Teeter brand reject.
We are very proud of her; she is now a big girl and 100% organic without any embedded plastic. But it’s kind of sad also because now that she has a belly button and no more cord stump, it’s virtually impossible to distinguish her from an adult.

The couch is covered in poop

Somehow she managed to torque her body in such a way that it’s as if she’s wearing no diaper at all. She’s extremely pleased with herself.

Milk shake
August 16th, 2003 · No Comments
Trixie released a plume of milk today all over everything — the first real spit-up since the day we got back from the hospital. Thankfully this is much rarer than the daily/hourly urine exhibitions which aren’t all that bad because baby pee doesn’t really smell like anything. However, slowly souring, non-pasteurized, partially digested, vitamin and fat-rich Jennifer milk is a different story.

Trixie’s Master Plan
August 16th, 2003 · 1 Comment
Trixie has a crazy look in her eye. She doesn’t like being swaddled and she doesn’t think she needs to be restrained. We can tell from her hissing and grunting. She looks at us with the narrowed eyes of the little lunatic she is, “Nothing can stop me and my army of spiders.”

Note to the Reader

All entries prior to August 16th, are predated to preserve the continuity of experience. The blog didn’t exist when she came into the world, but I still remember what I was thinking. The entries are somewhat compressed but should give a fair representation of the first two weeks.

Hisss ughhh ugggh
August 9th, 2003 · No Comments
Trixie just won’t stop making all kinds of weird grunting, honking and hissing noises. She makes plenty while she is nursing, but also when she’s sleeping. The hissing and grunting in particular reinforce the lizard idea. Occasionally we’ll get a coo or a sigh, but those are rather rare.

Don’t you hate pants?
August 8th, 2003 · No Comments
Apparently Trixie hates pants and wants to run around naked. She had tried to bargain with us, promising that if we take her diaper off, she won’t pee all over everything. We don’t trust her for a second.
