Knock knock

May 31st, 2005 · 21 Comments

Trixie has been babbling so much lately that it’s easy to forgot that she has none of our shared verbal cultural history. You discover her earnest shortcomings on a fairly regular basis when you just slip into casual conversation. The latest incident was my attempt to tell Trixie a joke:

I say, “Knock, knock.”

Trixie’s got nothing.

“Trixie, say ‘who’s there?’, Ok? I’ll do it again.”

“Knock, knock”

Still nothing.

I fill in for her. ” Knock, knock. Who’s there?”

Trixie has plenty to say about that:
“MOMMY! MOMMMMMMY!!!”

Trixie will run around screaming Mommy for five minutes. That’s the sign of a very good joke. And it’s flexible. If Jenn is the one telling it, the punchline switches to “DADDY!” If you like edgier humor, the punchline is also sometimes “JUICE!” Need to clean it up because you’re telling the joke in front of the grandparents? Try “ELMO!” The only thing you can’t do with this joke it get to the real punchline. But that’s ok, she doesn’t really care about oranges and bananas anyway*.

*Orange you glad you’re not a banana.

I’m putting you in this freezing bath for your own good

May 12th, 2005 · 17 Comments

Trixie is sick. First time since the massive exposure when we started school. She’s been home with me all day and sporting a 101-103.5 fever. It’s the .5 that gets me. 103, I can deal with. 103.5, it’s time to dump her in the bath. Putting a sick toddler in a luke-cool bath is about as much fun as putting a cat in any bath. Luckily we had Trixie’s front claws clipped recently.

The good news is that Jenn just gave the word that the fever seems to have finally broken. Her head is sweaty, but her body is no longer radiating heat like an open stove. It’s a big relief. She’s been pretty miserable today. All she’s eaten is 3 popsicles and box of 3-week old Chinese food. It breaks your heart.

In other news, who wants to guess what Hannah* has been up to? Haven’t heard from her in a while, right? Well… sometimes it’s hard to get online and surf when you’re busy taking care of twins. Yep — I’m happy to congratulate Hannah and company on the recent healthy births of Carina and Henry. They have no idea what a cool mom they are getting — it’s just too bad hannah’s next comment on this site will probably be around 2008. Good luck guys, we’re thinking of you!

* AKA old school hannah,
