Bad Habits

Mine have lead to Trixie’s. Against the advice of my Mom, Gramma, various co-workers over the years and every dentist in the world, I eat ice all the time. Some of this has spilled over to Trixie when I started feeding her ice back when she was teething. Now she has a vicious appetite for it.

If she sees one of us with a glass of ice water, she immediately plunges her entire hand into the glass. It’s like watching a bear try to swipe salmon. She’s usually not very successful at actually grabbing a piece because she’s shocked anew every time by the ice-cold temperature, but she has fun splashing water everywhere with her numb, blue hand.

It didn’t take her long to figure out that the ice in the cup eventually becomes ice in my mouth. While I can hold a cup at arms length from her, it’s harder to hold her and keep her away from my mouth at the same time. If she hears me crunching a piece, she’ll grab my lips with both hands and pry them apart with freakish baby-strength. I’m able to keep my teeth locked shut, but I eventually yield and give her the ice because I’m afraid she’s going to tear my lip off. I’ve already had to start cutting her fingernails every other day because my gums were getting sliced to pieces by her little razor tipped fingers.

Long story short, Trixie is making me kick the habit out of simple self-defense. But eating ice barely seems like a bad habit anymore, at least compared to reaching elbow deep into somebody else’s mouth.

Ahh, the return of Trixie’s icy daggers. One of my favorite of her attributes, this time in a new posture, though. Last time I believe she was attacking your leg? Face must be far more intense. At least Trixie has style in her ice grabbing - loving the image of the bear swiping salmon - Sophie shares the naughty fist-in-glass-ice-hunting habit, but she never had any style. Also, Trixie clearly goes the extra mile with her daring reaches and clawing about your mouth. If she were a bear you would be quite mauled, no? Be thankful for the small things . . .

Very well written entry -the imagery of the bear, and the visuals of her being surprised by the temperature of the water… Too funny. I think I enjoy this site (I’ve only been visiting a few days) because I’m sharing some of the same experiences with my 16 month old daughter. She’ll grab my lips and just pry them open - not necessarily to get at something I’m chewing, but rather (it seems) just because she can. It’s just good to know that I’m not alone in my pain. ;-)
Best of luck - you have a beautiful daughter.

Thought you’d enjoy this as an ice lover…

I had a simliar problem with my chocolate “habit”. Once my daughter developed a taste for it too, I started sneaking it when she was not in the room, trying to save her from the awful drug. But then she smelled it on my breath, and said “Mommy have chocolate?” Nabbed! So now I wait until she is safe in bed, at which point I consume mass quantities.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha — i can so remember callie doing that! this is the funniest post yet. the freakish baby strength is no joke when they are trying to get something out of your mouth.

Ice eating habit may be attributed to lack of Iron. Your body may be telling you something. A simple blood test will verify or donate blood and they will test it for free. That way, you will know for sure.

Gosh, I can’t relate to any of this. Why? I guess because I am a “confirmed” bachelor. My policy is: Why get married and love only one when you can stay single and love them all!! Hey, I works for me. At least it has for 66 years. (Dads, eat your hearts out)

I have to warn you. Eating ice will lead to having a hair-line crack in teeth. I am a prime example of this. So be careful eating ice all the time.

To all who are not Gordon: I’m sorry, but despite my better judgment I’m feeling compelled to feed the trolls.

    Gordon:
I can’t guarantee I speak for all the fathers who visit TTU, but I’d lay odds that I do when I tell you that you’re the one who’s missing out. You will never “love them all” with even a fraction of the intensity with which I love my daughter. You could even take the sum over the range of 0-all, and it still wouldn’t compare.

I can relate to those who eat ice all the time because I must have it at least 6 or 7 times a day. The best ice is the snow cone ice or Sonic ice. If I can’t get to it there, then I eat it from my ice maker at home. My husband hates it and says that I annoy the hell out of him when I eat. I can’t help it and that’s why I have been looking up the ice eating habit to see what the deal really is and why I have to have it. I see now that I should get my iron level checked because that may be it. I do notice however that when I am pregnant I crave it more than now and after I have the baby, I don’t have a taste for it anymore and then I’m right back at square one hitting rock bottom. LOL-

I as well am a chronic ice eater and i’ve been put in the hospital for a blood tranfusion and after that, i really didn’t crave ice anymore after that, but it had become such a habit that now i’m back eating it again, not because i crave it, but out of habit….It’s a bad one to break because i know that it’s extremely bad for me!!
