Think she was trying to win at a wet t-shirt contest?

Our 19 mth old, Kayleigh, does this. She's determined to drink from our cups, glasses, bottles, whatever...and if you don't watch her, it's all over her...just like lil' Trixie! Her Daddy gave her a sip of his coffee and now she's a fan of that too! They're always anxious to be "bigger" :)

I think Trixie has been reading your science textbooks. Osmosis might not be the fastest way to quench your thirst, but it's certainly the nerdiest.

It is obvious what has transpired: The ever-curious Trixie has attempted to dislodge a cervid from the new toy provided by her thoughtful mom and dad - the plastic cylindrical "Deer Park." Is it her fault that even with a good friendly shake Bambi failed to come out of the park for a little romp with Trixie?

Congratulations, Dr. Bonnie, for the first usage of the word "cervid" on this, or any, baby blog. Let me explain to everyone else that it is a type of Italian motorbike favored by babies.

Schaff, thanks for the recognition on vocabulary usage but the credit goes to rhymezone.com, which Trixie can use as she soon begins her studies for the SAT exams - next week. (Yes, the quest for success starts early these days: Parents be sure to read the excellent book, Einstein Didn't Use Flash Cards)
And no, a cervid is not a motor bike, it is an ungulate with antlers. Don't confuse Trixie who when she gets older, will want a Harley not some -how do you say it these days - "girlie babyish motorbike."

All this talk about cervids, ungulates and antlers makes me think that someone has the inside scoop on tomorrow's TPOD.

For a man who constantly yearns for sleep and has a big outing at the zoo to boot, quit blogging and start snoring - go to bed! (I just finished talking with Schaff and gave him the same motherly directive).
By the way even as Trixie has mastered the all-through-the-night sleeping routine don't get complacent, once she gets bigger she will be wandering into your bedroom in the middle of the night for years to come. All the more reason for getting some shut eye right now. Enjoy Trixie in the real Deer Park tomorrow. Good night and have fun.

MY kids love drinking water out of the bottle too- its the only way I can get them to drink water if its not from a fountain. My 4 year old doesnt like babyish stuff anymore, but it works on Sophie who is 2. I buy the "Kids" Dannon brand which is an adorable small water bottle from an 8 pack, and it has flouride. It has an adjustable cap to open/close it and while its not completely spill proof, it helps tremendously.

I carry several and have handed some over to other moms I see having trouble giving their kids water through a bottle.

PS Unlike Sophie, who freaks out of she gets a drop of water on her shirt, Trixie really seems to be enjoying getting cooled off here.

Kids come in all different sizes, shapes, colors, AND temperaments. Some are quick to warm up other slow to warm up, for example. Some seem oblivious to stimuli, others very sensitive. One might feel the scratch of a tag on a shirt while another might not even notice if they have one on their back! One child might feel comfortable splashing around in the water another might feel more tentative about getting wet and feeling cold water on her body. (I was that sort of kid and it still takes me 15 minutes in the dead of summer to make my way into a cold pool, while my younger brother used to dive into the sea in early summer like a happy polar bear into the Arctic Ocean.)

All human critters have personality styles, a particular way of approaching the world. It does not make one good or another bad - just different.

Knowing a child's temperament can make it easier to manage as a parent and reduce tension. You would be happily surprised about how this information can make your life with your little one much easier. As a parent, you can adjust your expectations accordingly and respond to your child's style; For example, giving the slow to warm-up kid more time to get adjusted to new settings and situations. Perhaps a kiddie pool with warm water would be more suited to one child's temperament, while another delights in a bottle of cold Deer Park water running down her chest. Viva La Difference!
