this is a funny picture. callie used to climb out of the crib at least 2-3 times a night. she would hold on with her feet (well kind of her toes) to the slats on the crib and shimmy up the sides until she was balanced on the top bar of the crib. she would teeter back and forth until she got her leg (the one on the outside) attached to a crib slat then climb down. the amazing thing about her method is that not only did she NEVER fall, she also did this in total silence. i just happened to bust her one night. kids -- they never cease to amaze. I knew a family that had to resort to a tent/net contraption to keep their two-year-old in her crib. They even had to safety pin the zipper from the outside, because she knew how to get it open otherwise. You laugh now...just wait, Trixie is only a year old. By two she'll be out for sure! Makes me wonder if Colum's trying to climb out of his crib. Is that a Bob Rankin poster above her crib? Maybe she's trying to escape from the Ubiquitous Teal. Posted by: John at September 9, 2004 11:57 AM

I just figured out why you went to the Zoo. You weren't studying the animals.... you were examining their enclosures! Posted by: Rob at September 9, 2004 12:10 PM

We kept our daughter in the crib until she was 3 1/2. She never once climbed out that we know of. I did catch her climbing IN once, so I'm fairly certain she could have done it if she had wanted to, but she didn't! Even after we moved her to the bed, she would pretty much hang out in bed until we came in, at least for the first few weeks. I think the secret was that before we went to bed, we'd always go in and put a few books or toys in, so when she woke up there would be something "fresh" to entertain her for awhile. My mom said she used to put a little bowl of Cheerios in my crib when she went to bed on Friday nights so that I would let her sleep in on Saturdays.....we found that books were just as effective, but I thought the Cheerios idea was another good one. It has been well established that Trixie can store her own Cheerios for morning consumption. Rachel doesn't try to leave the crib when she wakes in the morning, but that's because before *we* go to bed HW and I loose the rabid hounds to prowl the baby's room. After our leisurely sleep, and perhaps some light morning conversation, we usually enter Rachel's room to see her sitting very still and quietly, and very much in the center of the crib. The best part is, she hasn't realized where the beasts come from, and still thinks of us as *rescuing* her. --FD Rachel - if you ever read this: You may or may not remember that I'm kidding, but you've probably figured out your dad's bizarre sense of humor.
