i didn't know that people drank egg creams down south. I'm born and raised in the egg cream "capital" (brooklyn, ny) and i'm always HATED them. jessica- an egg cream is choc syrup, milk and seltzer. no eggs, no cream, go figure... :-) Posted by: Michele at October 5, 2005 02:56 AM

Rob: We have a couple of those and they have come from different restaurants, so I think it's sort of a generic product. I can't remember exactly which restaurants though. Maybe Jenn can help. michele: Thanks for the link! I had forgotten about that receipt. And yes, moving the Bronx was how I got exposed to them -- Jenn knew about them from when she was a kid. My fave book as a kid was 'Harriet the Spy' and Harriet's fave drink was an egg cream. I always pictured them as a sort of vanilla milkshake. It's cool to finally find out what they are! Maybe I'll try making one...is seltzer the same as soda water? Posted by: momwannabe at October 5, 2005 12:41 PM

Ugh, just the thought of what that must taste like turns my stomach. I've never been one for carbonated dairy products. I despise root beer floats. I once went to lunch with my principal as a kid and he mixed milk and Pepsi together and I thought that he was crazy. Who thinks of mixing such strange things together? Jessica: There are probably folks that argue over the exact nature of an egg cream, but I'm not one of them. I just fill the glass half-way up with milk, stir in about a tablespoon of chocolate syrup and then fill the rest with seltzer and give it one stir. No idea if the brand/kind of seltzer matters, but I sure wouldn't use flavored :) Here's another recipe from the splendid table if you want to try different proportions. Good luck! Save the tonic for your gin :) Many grocery stores sell seltzer water in 1 liter and 2 liter bottles on the soda aisle -- it doesn't have to be in cans. I hope you can find some! If you are in NYC, probably one of the most famous places (at least in Manhattan) to get an egg cream is Sammy's Roumanian. There, they actually make it with the kind of seltzer that comes in a glass bottle with its own CO2 cartridge - which, I am sure purists would argue, is the only way to really make an egg cream. (Though you definitely still need a spoon, the shooting, fizzing seltzer agitates the milk and chocolate syrup a bit.)
