The Antithesis of Wedding Week, Day 3
6 days after Trixie bruised her chin, she slipped when fooling around on a chair, hit her jaw on the table and almost bit through her lip. The amount of blood was enormous, and this time we did take her to the after hours walk-in clinic at the doctor's office. Again, it turned out to be nothing. I'm not sure how many more freebies we get before someone there calls child services.

I kinda think this is normal.

It's all or nothing.

From my previous experiences....you'll look back and think..."how did this kid make it to adulthood?"

It's amazing how tough they are.

Take care Ben/Jenn

p.s. Her little blue birthmark is unscathed.

That's a good thing---her trademark

Turning out to be a very colorful week! Love the big eyes. Ben, you've got to watch out - when she grows up the boys will fall in love with those eyes of hers!

Indiana Trixie. She'll make a fortune in the movies when she grows up, just like one of my fave actors who makes up stories about his famous chin scar.

I actually did have my pediatrcian call once when my children were younger (school age) pretending to be Social Services!!!!! Both my daughter and my younger son had broken their arms within days of each other!! He had gotten the reports from the hospital and called.....luckily I recognized his voice within seconds but what a SCARE at first! This pix of Trixie looks soooooo sad to me! Be careful Trixie!!!!

so normal... the nurse at our hospital told us so long as the cut/split is just on the lip, there's no need for stitches. :)

When I was a kid I:
* fell out of a tree while climbing (age 5)
* fell into a pond and nearly drowned - a 2-yr-old saved me (age 3)
* almost caught my coat in fire when standing too close to an old-school radiator (it melted (plastic coat)) (age 4)
* got hit by a car while riding my bike (age 13)
* got my toes stuck in my bike wheels while riding barefoot (age 4)
* fell off the kitchen counter when watching my Dad bake bread (I was in a seat, but kicked myself off the counter and went down head first (the seat landed on me) (age 9 months)

And that's just the stuff I remembered off the top of my head. Trixie will be fine...you have many more years of this kind of thing to come - no sense stressing about it now!

I once pushed my sister off a landing and she fell two stories. I was five at the time, she was two. She was absolutely fine. Kids amaze me with their resiliency.

Poor Trixie. It's an accident-prone week.

A couple of questions for Trixie's Mom - as a doc, do you think that your clinical experience has an influence on the decision of whether or not you take little Trixie in to get checked out by another professional?

My fiance is finishing med school and he is less likely to be concerned as small/medium trauma-related accidents happen...feels he can do initial triage pretty well on his own, etc.

case and point: i recently fell off a mt bike and got a NICE concussion (lots of facial swelling PLUS a nice shiner, oops no helmet) but he was not at all concerned - i.e. didnt seem to feel it warranted scans based on my responses and symptoms I was presenting, and the rational being if it isnt worse than a concussion, a doc isnt going to do anything other than provide advice he already knows.

I imagine in most cases, if you weren't legally prevented from treating Trixie, you would be capable of doing so...do you ever find yourself in disagreement with a decision made by Trixie's docs - such as some sort of stitch or butterfly closure for her lip?

Wow she is really pretty! Do you ever wonder if she'll grow up to be a clutz? I know most kids get all kinds of scrapes and mishaps growing up, I did too but its a funny thought to picture Trixie this tall beautiful women walking down the street in her heels and then tripping. wow is that mean? I'm sorry Trixie, I don't really wish for you to grow up to become clumsy really, I'm sorry. teehee! It'd be a little funny tho... sorry sorry! :)

Poor Trixie.

When my brother was about five, he fell off the back of a set of bleachers and bit almost all the way through his tongue. I was very jealous of all the popsicles he got for that one.

He healed completely without any treatment but popsicles.

Hi Jenn-
Sorry for the delay. To answer your questions, I have a tendency to freak out a lot more than Ben does for the big accidents, but I guess I handle the regular cough/cold/flu stuff without much anxiety. I'm the one who frantically called the after-hours nurse for advice when Trixie hit her chin and then wanted to bring her in to the office when she bit her lip. I'm in Pathology (so I don't see a lot of live patients) and I'm more than happy to defer to the Pediatrician for just about everything.
